The rivers and canals of Holland froze regularly during the “Little Ice Age” (1500–1850), but instead of berating this climatic change, the hardy Dutch burghers delighted in all types of winter sports. They skated, sledded, and fished on the icy waterways, and even played golf! Indeed, the Dutch claim to have invented this game, then called colf.
